The Select Committee on Environment, Science, and Technology has conducted a working visit to Newmont Ghana’s operations in the Ahafo Region to evaluate the company’s adherence to environmental safeguards and public health protections. Led by Professor Hamza Adam, the delegation emphasized that the visit was a core component of the committee’s oversight responsibility to ensure that mining activities align with national goals for reducing carbon emissions and protecting natural resources.
During the engagement, Professor Adam revealed that the Minerals Commission is currently developing a comprehensive policy document aimed at mandating structured alternative livelihood programs for all host communities across mining concessions in the country.
The General Manager of Newmont Ghana, Mr. Samuel Noi, welcomed the lawmakers and affirmed the company’s strict compliance with safety protocols established by the Environmental Protection Agency and other regulatory bodies. He highlighted the firm’s recent accolades, noting that Newmont was adjudged the best mining performer and the first runner-up for best environmental management in 2024.
However, Mr. Noi urged the committee to assist in addressing significant operational threats, including illegal mining, bushfires, vandalism, and frequent demonstrations. Following a comprehensive tour of the facility, the Vice Chairman of the Committee and Member of Parliament for Suame, John Darko, expressed satisfaction with the safety measures and environmental protocols currently in place at the site.
