President John Dramani Mahama has announced a significant expansion of his “Accra Reset” initiative during the World Economic Forum in Davos, drawing a wave of support from current and former world leaders committed to achieving health sovereignty for the Global South.
The President unveiled a revamped Presidential Council that now includes the sitting heads of state and government from South Africa, Kenya, India, Brazil, Egypt, Barbados, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Indonesia, and Nigeria. This strategic alliance marks a pivotal shift in international cooperation, aimed at addressing systemic health inequalities and fostering self-reliance across developing nations.
In addition to the sitting leaders, President Mahama introduced a “Circle of Guardians” composed of influential former heads of state and international diplomats. This advisory body features prominent African figures such as former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo of Nigeria, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf of Liberia, Joyce Banda of Malawi, John Kufuor of Ghana, Jakaya Kikwete of Tanzania, and Ameenah Gurib-Fakim of Mauritius.
The circle also includes former African Union Chairperson Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, ensuring a wealth of continental experience guides the initiative’s objectives.
The global reach of the Accra Reset was further solidified with the inclusion of several former Prime Ministers from beyond the continent, including Gro Harlem Brundtland of Norway, Gordon Brown of the UK, Helen Clark of New Zealand, Romano Prodi of Italy, P.J. Patterson of Jamaica, and Hailemariam Desalegn Boshe of Ethiopia. By assembling this diverse group of seasoned statesmen and women, President Mahama continues to elevate Ghana’s diplomatic standing while fostering a collaborative environment to co-create solutions for the challenges facing the Global South.
