The Ghana Police Service has arrested three individuals suspected of operating a criminal syndicate that utilized taxi cabs to rob unsuspecting passengers of mobile phones and other valuables. The suspects, identified as Sasu Lawrence, also known as Agbe, Richard Osei, and Charles Kofi Nti, also known as Survivor, were taken into custody on January 12, 2026, following a targeted, intelligence-led operation. Their arrest comes as part of a broader effort to dismantle organized theft rings operating within the transport sector.
According to preliminary investigations, the group primarily operated during the early morning hours, posing as legitimate taxi operators seeking passengers. The suspects typically arranged themselves with two individuals in the front seats and one in the rear to mimic a partially occupied commercial vehicle. Police revealed that once a victim—frequently a woman—boarded the taxi, the suspects would deliberately lock the doors to prevent her from exiting. As the victim struggled to open the door, the suspect in the back seat would pretend to offer assistance while surreptitiously stealing the victim’s phone or wallet.
The three suspects are currently in police custody and are assisting with ongoing investigations. Meanwhile, law enforcement agencies are intensifying efforts to track down and arrest the individuals who receive and trade in the stolen electronics and items. The police have signaled that further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses to ensure all members of the network are brought to justice.
