The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued an urgent Snow Squall Warning for parts of northern Illinois, including Rockford and the greater Chicago area, effective until 9:00 AM CST. The alert, classified as an Imminent Threat, warns of rapidly deteriorating travel conditions due to intense bursts of snow, near-zero visibility, and sudden road icing.
Motorists are strongly advised to slow down or delay travel as the squall moves through the region. According to NWS Chicago, wet roadways will freeze quickly, creating hazardous black ice on roads, bridges, and overpasses. These conditions may lead to a sudden loss of traction, increasing the risk of accidents.
“Rapid changes in visibility and road conditions are expected,” the alert states. “Be alert for sudden whiteout conditions.”
Emergency services urge drivers to remain vigilant, reduce speed, and avoid unnecessary travel until the warning expires. This weather event poses a serious threat to commuters during the morning rush hour.
