HE Victor Emmanuel Smith: Ghana’s Ambassador to the United States

Ghana’s former Minister for Finance, Kenneth Nana Yaw Ofori-Atta, has declined consular assistance from the Ghana Embassy in Washington, D.C., following his detention by United States authorities. In a statement issued by the diplomatic mission, officials confirmed that while they moved promptly to establish the facts surrounding the situation, Mr. Ofori-Atta indicated he would only engage with embassy staff in the presence of his legal team.

Upon learning of the detention, the Ghana Embassy initiated standard diplomatic procedures under the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations to verify the circumstances and request formal access to the former minister. However, authorities at the detention facility informed the mission that Mr. Ofori-Atta personally exercised his right to decline a meeting with consular officers at this stage. The embassy clarified that this decision was a personal choice made by the detainee and did not result from any refusal of access by U.S. officials.

Mr. Ofori-Atta, a prominent figure who led Ghana’s Ministry of Finance through significant economic reforms and international negotiations, remains at the center of growing public and political attention both at home and abroad. While the specific grounds for his detention have not been disclosed, the embassy noted that it is maintaining active engagement with U.S. counterparts and monitoring the situation closely to ensure his rights and welfare are fully respected.

The mission declined to comment on any potential legal proceedings, citing the importance of due process, but reiterated its readiness to provide welfare checks, legal representation assistance, or family communication should Mr. Ofori-Atta request such support in the future. For now, the embassy remains in regular contact with relevant U.S. agencies as the matter unfolds.
