The Western Regional Police Command has launched an investigation into a fatal shooting incident that occurred on Saturday, December 13, 2025, at a mining company site in Adelekezu, near Dadwen in the Axim District.
The incident resulted in the death of a boy and significant destruction of company property following a confrontation between private security personnel and local youth.
Preliminary investigations suggest that a group of youth from Adelekezu attempted to invade the company’s concession, leading to a misunderstanding with the private security guards. The situation escalated when the youth reportedly tried to seize a pump action gun from one of the security men.
The guard resisted the attempt and fired the weapon, hitting the boy. The victim was rushed to the Axim Government Hospital for treatment but was pronounced dead on arrival.
The death of the boy, whose name is being withheld, infuriated the town’s youth, who went on a rampage at the site. They proceeded to set fire to several company vehicles, including two 4×4 SUVs and two tipper trucks, and also damaged a pickup and a Toyota Land Cruiser. The mob also reportedly threatened to lynch the workers present.
A Police team dispatched to the scene successfully rescued 11 workers. They subsequently arrested five suspects for causing harm and unlawful damage: Gyenyame Owusu (38), Matthew Asamah (24), Nana Yaw (15), Yaw Opoku (16), and Kojo Agyei (21).
The Western Regional Command is appealing to members of the community to remain calm and fully cooperate with the ongoing investigation to ensure that justice is served.
The details were confirmed by Ms Olivia ET Adiku, Superintendent of Police and Head of the Public Affairs Unit in Sekondi/WR.
