ACCRA — Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has pledged to prioritize strengthening tax compliance and deploying new electronic tools over resorting to new taxes, stating he will not overburden existing taxpayers. Following a working visit to the Osu Tax Service Centre, Dr. Forson acknowledged the successful efforts in controlling public expenditure and the strong performance of the central bank, but stressed that domestic revenue collection must now “rise to the challenge.”
The Minister conveyed a firm commitment to the revenue collection process, emphasizing that his visit was strictly to encourage the tax officials. He vowed that he would not obstruct the process of collection, stating he would not interfere “no matter whose ox is gored.” Dr. Forson expressed his reluctance to impose additional levies on the populace, noting that it pains him whenever the government must resort to higher taxes instead of improving existing collection mechanisms and widening the tax compliance net.
Looking ahead, the Finance Minister announced a significant shift in strategy, revealing plans to deploy new electronic tools across the service next year to enhance efficiency. Furthermore, he committed to dedicating nearly half of his time to personally supporting the revenue transformation agenda. Dr. Forson concluded that this collective effort will be vital in building a fairer, stronger, and more sustainable revenue system for the nation.
