Ghana’s Ambassador to the United States, His Excellency Victor Emmanuel Smith, called on Philadelphia business leaders and U.S. officials during a high-level meeting in Washington, D.C., to significantly deepen economic engagement, focusing on opportunities well beyond the traditional cocoa trade. The Ambassador stressed Ghana’s dedication to cultivating a vibrant, inclusive, and investor-friendly economy, noting recent reforms aimed at bolstering private sector participation and attracting sustainable investment. “Ghana is open and ready for business,” Ambassador Smith stated, inviting U.S. partners, including those from Pennsylvania, to join in creating opportunities for shared prosperity and long-term development.

The engagement was centrally coordinated by Florence Porson-Hart, Director of Commerce, City of Philadelphia, who ensured a focused exchange between the two regions. The gathering included representatives from Pennsylvania’s government and business sectors, notably David Webster, CEO of Webster Marketing International. Webster echoed the potential for value-added products, stating, “Cocoa has connected our economies for decades, but we see tremendous potential in agro-processing, food technology, and services… Ghana has so much more to offer, and we are excited to explore these new avenues.”
Discussions covered a wide range of potential collaboration, including commercial farming, irrigation, mechanization, and the agro-processing of commodities like cocoa, cashew, shea, rice, and poultry. Opportunities were also identified in tourism, hospitality, healthcare, ICT, renewable energy, and light manufacturing. Other Philadelphia officials, including Harold T. Epps, Advisor to the Patents of Commerce, and Yvonne Boye, Deputy Director of Commerce, also participated, emphasizing the city’s commitment to fostering inclusive trade and sustainable, high-impact partnerships. Ambassador Smith concluded by reassuring stakeholders of Ghana’s readiness to support investors through favorable policies and direct engagement. The meeting wrapped up with expressions of interest from Pennsylvania stakeholders regarding direct business missions to Ghana in the coming months, signaling Ghana’s growing role as a hub for sustainable investment in West Africa.
