The Ministry of Health has received a significant donation of MEPCEP training equipment, advanced simulation models, and family planning commodities from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). Valued at close to GHS 40 million, this support is part of UNFPA’s long-standing partnership with Ghana aimed at strengthening midwifery education and reproductive health services to improve maternal health outcomes.

Dr. Wilfred Ochan, the UNFPA Country Representative, stated that this major investment will enhance the practical training available for midwives, increase nationwide access to family planning resources, and directly contribute to reducing maternal mortality rates. He noted that UNFPA’s provision of contraceptives has already benefited more than one million couples this year, helping to prevent unintended pregnancies and saving hundreds of lives.

Receiving the items, Deputy Minister for Health, Prof. Dr. Grace Ayensu-Danquah, expressed gratitude for UNFPA’s sustained support. She affirmed that the resources will significantly raise the quality of midwifery training across the country and emphasized that the Ministry expects all beneficiary institutions to use the equipment solely for skills development while maintaining strict accountability.

The Deputy Minister concluded that these investments will help build a stronger midwifery workforce and improve care for mothers and newborns as Ghana continues its work toward achieving universal health coverage.
