Accra — Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has announced that he held a constructive meeting today with the Acting United States Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Rolf Olson, to review recent progress in Ghana–U.S. relations.

The discussions highlighted several positive developments, including:

  • The restoration of five-year visas for Ghanaian citizens.
  • The removal of former President Trump’s 15% tariffs on cocoa, semi-processed cocoa, and other qualifying agricultural products.
  • Special arrangements for Ghanaian soccer fans attending the World Cup.
  • Ghana’s exemption from last week’s U.S. Green Card review and immigration suspension policy.

Beyond trade and mobility, both parties reaffirmed their commitment to enhanced security cooperation. Under the longstanding bilateral Defence Cooperation Agreement, Ghana and the United States have expanded intelligence sharing and training initiatives, with coordinated use of U.S. military aviation assets. Officials emphasized that all aviation activities will be conducted in consultation with the appropriate Ghanaian authorities.

Ablakwa further expressed optimism regarding ongoing negotiations under the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), noting Ghana’s determination to secure favorable outcomes for its citizens.

“Ghana–U.S. relations will continue to prioritize the best deals for the people we serve,” Ablakwa stated, underscoring that the nation’s strategic interest remains the guiding principle in all engagements.
