Lithium Agreement: A Betrayal of Ghana’s Future

H E President John Dramani Mahama – Please Stop this Lithium deal !

Sankofaonline News Desk

The unfolding saga of Ghana’s lithium agreement is nothing short of a betrayal of our nation’s future. When the New Patriotic Party (NPP) proposed a 10 percent royalty arrangement, it was rejected by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as inadequate. Yet, in a stunning reversal, the NDC has now returned to power only to present the same agreement, this time offering Ghana a mere 5 percent in royalties. This is not progress; it is regression. And it raises a fundamental question: do our leaders truly care about this country, or are they content to mortgage our destiny for short‑term gains?

We believe Ghanaians will not, and must not, support any agreement that yields less than 50 percent royalties. Anything below that threshold is an insult to our people, a continuation of the colonial legacy where multinational corporations strip our soil of wealth while leaving us crumbs. These minerals do not rot in the ground. They are not perishable commodities to be hurriedly handed over for peanuts. With expanding technology, knowledge acquisition, and training, Ghanaians will one day mine their own resources. Even if it takes fifty years, the day will come when our people can harness their own wealth without begging foreign companies to dictate the terms.

We urge the Mahama government to reconsider this path. History has already judged our forefathers harshly for surrendering gold and other natural resources to outsiders under exploitative terms. Must we repeat those mistakes with lithium, a mineral that will define the future of energy, technology, and global power? The least we expect is that the current government will not follow the same path they condemned during the Nana Addo administration. To do so would be hypocrisy of the highest order.

We stand for Ghana. We stand for the dignity of our people. And we stand against any political party, regardless of its colors, if its actions do not benefit our nation. This lithium agreement is not just about percentages; it is about sovereignty, justice, and the future of generations yet unborn. Ghana deserves better, and we will not relent in demanding it.

Thank you for pointing this out . Looks like they loose their senses when they get into power .

  2. It’s utterly with great sadness and stupendous cry for Mercy to read about a modern African government selling out again to the Western industrial powers!

I’m wondering what the present government officials ate for breakfast or lunch before the negotiations for them to sell out our sovereignty and God given mineral property. Were they drugged before the negotiations for them to sell out Africa again! My thinking on this deal if true is to support the axiom that “a leopard does not change its colors overnight “. These types of unthinkable acts by government officials have been spoken about in the past, and yet our government officials still continue to engage in them, why?

May I kindly ask, why our present government officials continue to sell out our mineral resources for mindless under the table crumbs after all these years of the western colonial exploitation, only for them to turn around and point out our mindless ignorance and sellout stupidity!

Our mineral resources will not rot in the ground if left alone in the ground for the next generation!

Please, govern officials, we those in the Diaspora are tired of being laughed and being ridiculed by some western politicians like the current President of the United States for our stupidity and senseless negotiation’s weaknesses!

Please think about the future before selling out our mineral resources for crumbs!

A word to the wise is Enough!
