Accra, Ghana — The Ministry of Health has hosted a delegation from the Alliance for Health Policy and the Institute Research Board to advance a U.S.-led initiative focused on bilateral cooperation in pathogen sharing and health sovereignty.

Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, emphasized Ghana’s dual commitment to achieving health independence while simultaneously strengthening its global partnerships.

Key Health Initiatives and Strategies

The Minister revealed that approximately 45 percent of mortalities in Ghana are linked to Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs). In response, the government is establishing a dedicated fund to combat NCDs and bolster the Free Primary Health Care programme, which is designed to reinforce community-level health systems.

Regarding the challenge of health workforce migration, Mr. Akandoh outlined a strategy to optimize recruitment to meet national needs while pursuing structured international collaborations. He disclosed that 14 countries have already signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with Ghana, reflecting a balanced approach between health sovereignty and international cooperation.

Furthermore, the Minister announced that Ghana has reached a verbal agreement with an international partner to support policy development for the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the health sector, alongside the retooling of primary health facilities.

International Recognition and Future Goals

Former WHO Regional Director for Africa, Madam Matshidiso Moeti, commended the government’s forward-looking health initiatives under the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama. She specifically lauded Ghana’s advancements in health financing through the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) and encouraged the nation to extend its leadership in health innovation to other African nations.

Mr. Akandoh concluded by reaffirming that the Ministry’s top priority remains the well-being of Ghanaians, stating that Ghana seeks to be a model of health sovereignty and equitable healthcare delivery across the continent.
