The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has issued a definitive statement declaring that Ghana will not accept the deportation of Kilmar Abrego Garcia from the United States. Minister Ablakwa stated unambiguously that Abrego Garcia’s deportation to the country is impermissible and confirmed this position has been directly conveyed to US authorities.
The Minister’s statement comes as the deportation fight intensifies ahead of a hearing for Garcia, whose attorney, Simon Sandoval-Moshenberg, recently received a notice from the US Department of Homeland Security indicating plans to deport him to Ghana.
Mr. Ablakwa clarified that Ghana’s previous understanding with US officials to accept a limited number of non-criminal West Africans was based purely on African solidarity and humanitarian principles and would not be expanded to include Garcia. He strongly objected to media reports suggesting otherwise, emphasizing that Ghana is not accepting the individual. The Minister’s stance asserts a firm limit on the scope of Ghana’s cooperation on repatriation matters with the US government.
