The ECOWAS Regional Competition Authority (ERCA) has pledged its full support for Ghana’s move to implement a Competition and Consumer Protection Law, an initiative aimed at aligning all member states with regional market fairness goals. An 11-member high-powered delegation from ERCA, led by Executive Director Dr. Simeon Konan Koffi, paid a courtesy call on the Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, in Accra on Tuesday, October 9, to discuss collaboration and regional updates.

Mrs. Ofosu-Adjare commended ERCA for its work in strengthening competition regulation and promoting market fairness across the sub-region. She assured the delegation of her Ministry’s readiness to collaborate on tackling cross-border trade and competition issues crucial for economic growth and consumer welfare. The Minister noted that the proposed policy is part of the next phase of Ghana’s trade agenda, which seeks to enhance national competitiveness and ensure both businesses and consumers benefit from fair market practices.

Dr. Konan Koffi explained that the visit was part of ERCA’s regional outreach to stress the importance of robust competition and consumer protection frameworks. He emphasized that ERCA is committed to helping member states create a level playing field that encourages investment, economic efficiency, and consumer welfare.

ERCA Chairperson Dr. Juliette Twumasi-Anokye reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to assisting member states in fulfilling their obligations under Article 3 of Supplementary Act A/SA.3/12/21, which mandates the adoption of national competition legislation and the establishment of independent national competition authorities. She highlighted the increasing urgency for regulation amid globalization and digital transformation to protect consumers from anti-competitive behavior. Both parties concluded the meeting by reaffirming their commitment to deepen collaboration for a transparent, competitive, and investor-friendly business environment across the ECOWAS region.
