In every community, there comes a moment when the character of its institutions is tested, not by external threats, but by the conduct of its own members. The Ghana National Council of Metropolitan Chicago (GNC), a beacon of Ghanaian unity and civic engagement in the diaspora, now finds itself at such a situation .
Credible reports reaching Sankofaonline.com indicate that a candidate in the current presidential race has been subjected to denigration during campaign activities. This revelation is not just disappointing, it is deeply regrettable. It strikes at the heart of what the GNC stands for: voluntary service, communal trust, and the dignified stewardship of our shared future.
Let us be unequivocal. These leadership roles are not trophies to be seized through manipulation. They are responsibilities entrusted to individuals by a community that values integrity over ambition. To tarnish a candidate’s reputation in pursuit of power is to betray the very principles that built this council. It is to trade honor for hostility, and unity for division.
The GNC was not founded on conquest. It was built on collaboration, on the belief that Ghanaian voices in Chicago could come together to preserve culture, promote progress, and uplift one another. Campaigning should reflect that spirit. It should be a celebration of ideas, a respectful contest of visions, not a battleground for character assassination.
Allegations questioning a candidate’s Ghanaian identity are deeply unfortunate and run counter to the inclusive spirit and founding values of the Ghana National Council. Such claims sow division where unity is needed most and must be firmly rejected.
We therefore issue a solemn appeal to all involved: desist immediately from any form of personal attacks, innuendo, or divisive rhetoric. Let the campaign be guided by respect, transparency, and a shared commitment to the greater good. Let candidates be judged by their service, their vision, and their integrity, not by whispers or weaponized gossip.
To the youth watching from the sidelines, wondering whether this is an institution worth joining: we say yes, but only if we, the elders and leaders, rise to the occasion. Only if we model the civility, courage, and compassion we wish to see in them. Only if we prove that leadership in the GNC is not about tearing others down, but about lifting the community up.
Let us remember: reputations are not just personal, they are communal. When we destroy one another, we diminish ourselves. When we uphold one another, even in disagreement, we strengthen the very fabric of our council.
Let honor prevail. Let decency lead. Let the GNC emerge from this election not fractured, but fortified, ready to serve, ready to grow, and ready to inspire.

If a sitting Vice President dont qualify to run for president then who qualifies ? This ladies who are bent on destroying a fellow lady must be careful . We know them . Hatred and jealousy. You are not even on the council so what is your problem?
If you have a politicians involved in a community organization what do you expect . I said it before , an NPP executive member should not be leading us .
GNC should be devoid of politics period . This not not and should not be a springboard for anyone’s political ambition .
As a Diasporan, I can’t vote in the GNC elections, but my contribution to this issue can’t be denied. As an impartial juror, I have one question for the court. What is Mr. Ameyaw’s attendance record? 80% is a benchmark per the constitution but if he was present 75% of the time, then, there’s a conversation to be had. But, if his attendance record is below 50%, his candidacy shouldn’t be tolerated.
As for the current vice president, there is no legal basis to disqualify her by the virtue of her current position.
That’s my take from afar, Ghana.
This article make a serious allegation of the questioning of one’s Ghanaian identity without offering any proof. This is a hearsay or a rumour at best. This is a serious accusation and this article should provide a hard truth to back up this assertion, otherwise this article just undermined the very call of decency that this article purports to be in favour of
