The Ghana National Council of Metropolitan Chicago, GNC, has called on the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) to ensure free, fair and transparent elections ahead of the 2020, Presidential and general elections.
The statement was issued on their Facebook page. The statement reiterates the need for Ghanaians to vote in peace and prevent election violence.
We at Sankofaonline.com agree with the timely call by the GNC since elections and other political processes are pivotal to the quality of a country’s governance and can either greatly advance or set back a country’s long-term democratic development and others. The most fundamental principle defining credible elections is that they must reflect the free expressions of the will of the people. It is therefore especially important that elections must be transparent, broad, and accountable. There should be reasonable prospects for all parties to compete. These broad tenets are supported by several electoral process-related obligations, as well as a few key rights and freedoms, that must be a guarantee for all. Indeed, elections should clearly show as a continuous, integrated process made up of the structure of cell blocks that interact with and influence each other, rather than as a series of isolated events to attain power.
By adding its voice and support for credible elections, we believe that the non-partisan GNC has shown the way to determine who leads Ghana through free and fair means.
