President John Dramani Mahama on Friday reiterated his firm resolve to eliminate illegal mining, known locally as ‘galamsey’, emphasizing his administration’s commitment to winning the fight against the destructive practice.

Speaking at a meeting with Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), president Mahama stressed that success depends on a unified national effort. “I am determined to win the fight, but I cannot do it alone,” he stated, calling upon every Ghanaian, CSOs, activists, and traditional leaders, to join the battle to protect the environment.

President Mahama welcomed the role of CSOs in ensuring accountability, encouraging them to be vigilant and apply pressure on him, his ministers, and all responsible officials. He described their advocacy and criticism as essential for success.

The president framed the fight as a moral duty to future generations, referencing the “beautiful country blessed with lush forests and pristine rivers” inherited from forefathers. He warned, “We cannot , and will not , hand them poisoned water bodies and destroyed forests.”
