In a sobering reflection on the state of global communication, President John Dramani Mahama of Ghana used his address to the United Nations General Assembly to challenge the prevailing optimism surrounding digital platforms and artificial intelligence. Far from celebrating the internet age, Mahama warned that the tools designed to connect humanity are increasingly driving it apart.
“The internet, social media platforms, and artificial intelligence offer the illusion of connectivity,” he said. “But what they actually do is reinforce isolation.” Mahama argued that algorithmic design favors repetition over discovery, feeding users more of what they already believe and less of what they need to understand. The result, he said, is a shrinking exposure to new ideas and perspectives.
He expressed concern over the growing acceptance of “alternative facts” and manipulated images, which have become commonplace in digital discourse. These distortions, Mahama warned, are not harmless, they are powerful engines of disinformation that fracture communities and erode trust.
Mahama’s remarks were a call to reexamine the digital landscape not as a neutral space, but as a battleground for truth and cohesion. In an era where technology shapes perception, he urged the global community to confront the dangers of curated isolation and to reclaim the public square for genuine dialogue and shared understanding.
