ACCRA, GHANA — The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has suspended the processing of all major requests from the University of Cape Coast (UCC) due to a dispute over the tenure of its Vice-Chancellor, Professor Johnson Nyarko Boampong. GTEC stated the university must comply with its directive for the suspension to be lifted.
In a letter dated September 22, 2025, GTEC informed UCC that it would no longer process requests for accreditation, government subventions, GETFund support, book and research allowances, post-retirement contracts, or financial clearance for recruitment. The commission explained that the decision was a result of Professor Boampong remaining in office beyond the mandatory retirement age of 60, despite a High Court injunction from October 8, 2024, that restrained the university’s Governing Council from making a decision on his appointment.
The directive, signed by GTEC’s Acting Deputy Director-General, Professor Augustine Ocloo, is effective immediately. Last week, GTEC had already instructed Professor Boampong to vacate his position, citing a conflict with the University of Cape Coast Act and its own statutes, which mandate compulsory retirement at age 60. GTEC has since directed the Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Professor Denis Worlanyo Aheto, to serve as acting Vice-Chancellor and has instructed the university’s Governing Council to await the resolution of the court case before appointing a permanent replacement.
