KUMASI, GHANA—A video circulating on social media has sparked controversy and debate after it showed Eze Chukwudi Jude Ihenetu, a figure who claims to be the “Igbo king” in Ghana, being prevented from shaking hands with the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II. The incident occurred on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, during the funeral ceremony for the late Asantehemaa, Nana Konadu Yiadom III, at the Manhyia Palace.
The video shows Eze Ihenetu and his entourage arriving at the funeral grounds to pay their respects. According to traditional protocol, the group was directed by the Asantehene’s linguist, Baffour Kantankrakye, to remove their hats and offer their condolences from a distance, without a direct handshake. The move, which is customary for some guests at the Manhyia Palace, left Eze Ihenetu visibly displeased.
The footage quickly went viral, prompting a range of reactions from social media users. While some questioned why the handshake was denied, others used the opportunity to mock Eze Ihenetu, referring to the incident as a “snub.” The online commentary includes remarks such as, “They didn’t allow the Igbo king to greet Otumfuo,” and “The Igbo was totally embarrassed at Manhyia.” The incident has further fueled a debate about Eze Ihenetu’s controversial claim to kingship in Ghana.
