Ghana’s Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, provided a comprehensive update on several key infrastructure initiatives when he took his turn on the Government Accountability Series. These projects include the establishment of a national air carrier and significant upgrades to airports and a shipyard.

During the event, the Minister announced that a ten-member task force has been created to oversee the establishment of a national air carrier. The group has already submitted an inception report and is expected to deliver an interim report soon, focusing on the final business and operational models for the new airline.

To address increasing passenger traffic and congestion, Kotoka International Airport’s (KIA) Terminal 2 will be repurposed into a dual-purpose facility supporting both domestic and international flights. According to the Minister, this move will optimize infrastructure and enhance the passenger experience.

Additionally, the existing Air Traffic Control Tower at KIA, which predates Ghana’s independence, is being replaced with a new, state-of-the-art facility that is currently 20% complete.

Further expansion is underway at other key airports. The runway at Prempeh Agyemang I International Airport is being extended to accommodate medium-sized aircraft and is 90% complete. The airport has also extended its night operations from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m., while Tamale International Airport’s night hours have been extended to 10 p.m.

The government also plans to redevelop Bolgatanga Airport to serve jet aircraft, with site assessments currently in progress.
In the maritime sector, the Tema Shipyard, which had been non-operational for many years, has been fully revamped and is now operational. The shipyard has reconstructed its main dock pump, reactivated a second dock, and rehabilitated its offices.

The Minister stated that these improvements have created jobs and the facility is now operating a three-shift system. Finally, the Transport Minister highlighted the recent inauguration of an Advanced Passenger Information (API) and Passenger Name Record (PNR) system at Ghana’s airports, designed to enhance the detection of suspected criminals and terrorists.
