ACCRA — Speaker of Parliament, Alban S. K. Bagbin, led a parliamentary delegation to the Jubilee House on Tuesday to present the Democracy Cup trophy to President John Dramani Mahama. The presentation marks a symbolic gesture ahead of the second edition of the football tournament, which is scheduled to take place on September 5, 2025.
The trophy presentation ceremony was attended by a number of key figures in Ghana’s sports community, including Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, National Sports Authority Director Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, and Ghana Football Association President Kurt Okraku. Representatives from the two competing clubs, Accra Hearts of Oak and Accra Great Olympics, were also in attendance.
The Democracy Cup, a parliamentary initiative launched in 2024, aims to promote national unity and civic engagement through football. This year’s final will see Accra Hearts of Oak and Accra Great Olympics face off at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium.
The inaugural match, held on July 17, 2024, saw Kumasi Asante Kotoko defeat Accra Hearts of Oak 2-1 to claim the first trophy. The event has since become a fixture on the national football calendar, celebrating Ghana’s democratic progress and the unifying power of sport.
According to the Ghana Football Association, the winner of this year’s tournament will be given the opportunity to participate in a three-team tournament in the United States in May 2026. This adds a new incentive for the competing teams and further elevates the profile of the Democracy Cup.
