AKWATIA, GHANA :The funeral ground is sacred soil. It is where we lay down our arms, where our political colors fade to black, and where we are all, simply, mourners. It is a space for solemnity, for shared humanity, and for the grace to grieve. Yet in Akwatia, this sacred space was desecrated by the very poison that has come to define our politics: the ugly, petty, and utterly shameless desire to win at all costs, even at the cost of our dignity.

The shocking attack on the NDC’s delegation at the one-week commemoration of the late Ernest Kumi was more than just a political scuffle. It was a profound violation of our cultural norms and a stain on our national conscience. To ambush and intimidate a grieving party,an invited one at that,is a level of depravity that should chill us all to the bone. This was not a clash of ideologies; it was a brazen act of political thuggery, a public display of our worst instincts.

What does it say about us when a widow, already crushed by the weight of her husband’s passing, must also endure the indignity of seeing his party’s supporters turn his memorial into a battlefield? The tears shed by Ernest Kumi’s widow were not just tears of sorrow; they were tears of shame,a testament to the emotional trauma inflicted upon her by those who claimed to honor her husband’s memory. This is a betrayal of the highest order, a grotesque perversion of what it means to be a political family.

Politics is a contest of ideas, not a license for violence. It is meant to be a service, not a battle for dominance that extends to the grave. We must condemn this behavior in the strongest possible terms. We must demand accountability from the police and, more importantly, from the leadership of the New Patriotic Party. If this is what passes for political activism, then we are in a far more precarious place than we care to admit.

The sanctity of our rituals, the peace of our funerals, and the civility of our society are all at stake. Let this be a wake-up call,a moment to reflect on what we have become and what we must do to redeem ourselves before our politics descends entirely into the gutter.
