CHICAGO, IL :The weekend of August 1-3, 2025, witnessed a powerful convergence of tradition and remembrance as over 500 mourners gathered at the YMCA Hall on 63rd and Stony Island to celebrate the life of Mrs. Charlotte Sophia Fianko Bonsu. Amidst a weekend of numerous other events, the hall became a sacred space where the Ghanaian community of Chicago paid its final respects to a matriarch whose legacy touched countless lives.

The air was filled with the resonant, ancient rhythms of the Akwapim Fontonfrom, a traditional drum ensemble whose thunderous beat is reserved for royalty and the most distinguished citizens. Its powerful cadence provided the backdrop for a sorrowful yet majestic celebration of life.
The rhythmic drumming and vibrant dancing were not merely entertainment; they were a profound cultural expression, a narrative woven through sound. The Fontonfrom tells the story of a journey to the ancestral realm, guiding the departed soul with a dignity befitting her status. It is a powerful affirmation that the life being celebrated was one of great honor and significance.

This majestic tribute was led by Nana Yirenkyi Bonsu, the Okuapeman Chief of Chicago, who mourned the passing of his devoted mother. Nearly every affiliate organization of the Ghana National Council was represented, with chiefs, elders, and community members paying homage to Nana Bonsu and his family. Their presence was a testament to Mrs. Bonsu’s standing and the deep respect held for her son’s leadership in the community.

Memorial and funeral rites spanned the entire weekend, with friends, family, and admirers gathering to honor a woman whose life was a beautiful chapter of grace, service, and boundless love. Mrs. Bonsu, born on September 28, 1938, in Kponkponso near Kwasi Diaka in Ghana’s Eastern Region, was the eldest of six children.

Her life’s work was dedicated to shaping young minds as a teacher, having earned her credentials from Krobo Odumase and Akropong-Akwapim. She taught for years at Akim Asafo Presbyterian Primary School, where her steady hand and nurturing heart left an indelible mark on generations of students.

Her unwavering faith and life of service were a living reflection of the virtuous woman described in Proverbs 31: a woman of substance, prayer, and unparalleled generosity. Her transition is not just a loss for the Bonsu family; it is the closing of a significant chapter for the entire community she served.

In a deeply moving statement, the Bonsu and Fianko families expressed their profound gratitude: “With hearts full of both sorrow and thanksgiving, we extend our deepest appreciation for the outpouring of prayers, presence, support, and generosity during the farewell service and final funeral rites of our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. Your compassion has been our solace, and we pray that God’s abundant blessings be upon you all.”
