ACCRA — President John Dramani Mahama has appointed Obuobia Darko-Opoku as the pioneer Administrator of the newly established Ghana Medical Trust Fund, also known as MahamaCares.

The announcement, made today, reassigns Darko-Opoku from her previous role as the Acting Deputy Managing Director of the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL).

The MahamaCares initiative is designed to tackle the financial burden of catastrophic healthcare expenditures for non-communicable diseases such as stroke, diabetes, cancer, and kidney failure. The multi-million cedi project is a bold initiative aimed at making a real difference in the lives of Ghanaians by providing financial relief to those facing high costs associated with these severe medical conditions.

The fund will be supported by a diverse range of funding sources, including the National Health Insurance Levy, government budgets, corporate contributions, and grants from development partners. This varied funding model is intended to ensure the sustainability of the project and its ability to provide long-term support for citizens in need.
