ACCRA, Ghana – The Mayor of London, Rt. Hon. Sadiq Khan, today paid a historic courtesy call on His Royal Majesty King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, Ga Mantse and President of the Ga Traditional Council, at his palace in Accra. This significant visit marks the first time a sitting Mayor of London has undertaken an official visit to Africa, underscoring a renewed commitment to fostering deeper ties between London and key African cities.
The visit to the Ga Mantse is part of Khan’s broader five-day trade mission to Africa, which also includes stops in Lagos, Nigeria, and Johannesburg and Cape Town in South Africa. The delegation accompanying the Mayor comprises 27 London-based companies, aiming to boost trade links, explore investment opportunities, and build on the extensive connections between London and the continent’s growing African diaspora.
During his visit to Accra, Mayor Khan is expected to deliver a speech on innovation and entrepreneurship at the University of Ghana and has also announced plans for a new memorial site in Accra dedicated to the victims of the Transatlantic Slave Trade, which will be part of a global network of remembrance monuments. The Mayor’s engagements highlight London’s commitment to strengthening economic, cultural, and innovation ties with Africa in a spirit of genuine partnership.
