Accra, Ghana – July 8, 2025 – Ghana’s Parliament has adjourned its proceedings after news broke of the sudden death of the Member of Parliament for Akwatia, Ernest Kumi. Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin sadly informed the House of Kumi’s passing in the early hours of this morning following a short illness.
Afenyo-Markin conveyed the profound shock felt by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Caucus, the Akwatia Constituency, and the Parliament of Ghana, noting that Kumi had been actively engaged in his parliamentary duties just last week.
He appealed to First Deputy Speaker Bernard Ahiafor, who was presiding, for an adjournment to allow members to mourn. “Colleagues let’s take heart as we continue our service to mother Ghana,” Afenyo-Markin consoled his colleagues.
Responding to the somber news, Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga described the day as one of the “saddest days of Ghana’s Parliament.” He extended condolences on behalf of the entire House to the immediate family of the late Ernest Kumi.
Ayariga concurred with the Minority Leader’s appeal, agreeing to adjourn the House and resume public business and proceedings tomorrow, Wednesday, July 9, 2025. The House observed a minute of silence in memory of Hon. Kumi before adjourning.
The leadership of Parliament is expected to visit the late MP’s family at an appropriate time to commiserate with them.
