The Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has informed Parliament about a recent outbreak of COVID-19 at the University of Ghana. The cases have been traced to the Omicron sub-variant and are currently limited to the university community. The outbreak was detected through Ghana’s influenza surveillance system and confirmed by the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research.
The Health Minister assured Parliament that the situation is under control, with adequate measures in place to manage the outbreak. Personal protective equipment, test kits, and treatment supplies have been distributed, and frontline health workers are receiving support. Facilities such as the Ghana Infectious Disease Centre remain on standby for any emergency response.
Member of Parliament for Essikado-Ketan, Grace Ayensu-Danquah, contributed to the discussion, calling for intensified public education on the use of face masks and hand sanitizers, especially among students. The Minister’s update came alongside a report on MPOX cases, with 133 confirmed cases across the Western, Greater Accra, and Western North Regions as of June 29, 2025.
“This is not a new virus, and we are not back in 2020,” the Health Minister said. “This Omicron variant spreads fast, but it is mostly mild. We know how to manage it, and our surveillance system is fully active and ready to respond.”
