President John Dramani Mahama honored Ghana’s senior citizens at a special luncheon at the Presidency on July 1, recognizing their contributions to the country’s development. The event, held as part of Republic Day activities, was attended by Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin, Acting Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, and Chairman of the Council of State Edward Doe Adjaho.

President Mahama pledged his government’s commitment to catering for the needs of children and the elderly, emphasizing that it is the duty of the government to ensure their well-being. “The dignity of older people is the dignity of our nation and we must protect it. The soul of any nation can be seen in how it treats its children and its senior citizens,” he said. “Ghana cannot thrive unless every citizen can live in dignity and aspire to a better future.”

The President underscored the importance of honoring senior citizens, noting that their wisdom is a resource that cannot be ignored. He called on the youth, policymakers, and institutions to learn from their experience and follow their guidance, emphasizing the need to build bridges between generations. “Let the young dream and let the old advise and guide. This is the formula for lasting progress,” he said.

President Mahama urged Ghanaians to renew their pledge to be loyal citizens, kind neighbors, diligent workers, and guardians of the nation. He charged citizens to commit to peace, truth, justice, and not favoritism, as the country celebrates Republic Day.
