A social media storm has erupted in Ghana after two South African men, Rue and Lue, shared photos of themselves kissing beneath the country’s iconic Independence Arch. The monument, a symbol of national pride and liberation, has been the site of numerous protests and celebrations, but the gay couple’s photoshoot has drawn widespread criticism.

Many Ghanaians have expressed outrage, describing the act as a gross disrespect to Ghanaian cultural values and national symbols. Some have questioned the couple’s intentions, speculating that the photoshoot might be a protest against attempts to pass an anti-LGBTQ bill.

Minister for Communications, Samuel Nartey George, has condemned the act, calling for law enforcement agencies to identify the couple and apply the full rigor of Ghana’s existing laws. George, a leading advocate for the anti-LGBTQ bill, criticized the previous administration’s failure to assent to the bill and demanded that President John Dramani Mahama sign it when passed again.

The controversy has sparked a heated debate, with some praising the couple for championing LGBTQ+ visibility and others criticizing the act as disrespectful. Kofi Okyere Darko, Director of Diaspora Affairs at the Presidency, initially shared the photos on Facebook but later deleted the post amid backlash.
