The Minister for Works, Housing and Water Resources, Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, has briefed Parliament on the recent flooding incidents affecting several parts of Ghana. The minister attributed the floods to both natural and human-induced factors, including intense rainfall and poor infrastructure.

Mr. Adjei described flooding as a persistent and destructive hazard in Ghana, resulting in loss of lives, displacement of families, and economic disruption. He highlighted regions affected by the floods, including Greater Accra, Ashanti, Western, Northern, and Volta.

The minister outlined the government’s response, which includes improving drainage systems, strengthening community preparedness, and implementing green and nature-based solutions. He also mentioned the ongoing Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID) project, supported by the World Bank, aimed at reducing flood risk in the Odaw Basin.

Mr. Adjei estimated that approximately $6 billion would be required to implement a comprehensive national flood control programme, calling for support from Parliament, stakeholders, and the public. MPs Eric Nana Agyemang-Prempeh and James Agalga urged the government to release funds for dredging flood-prone areas and supporting response efforts.
