The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has partnered with civil society organizations to train selected journalists on the legal rules and procedures governing asset confiscation in corruption and financial crime cases. The training, organized by the Ghana Anti-Corruption Coalition (GACC) in partnership with GIABA, aims to promote transparency and accountability through informed media reporting.

Albert Akurugu, Director of Asset Recovery and Management at the OSP, led the session, explaining the Office’s jurisdiction and legal processes for identifying, freezing, and confiscating assets linked to corruption. He emphasized that searches and asset preservation are legitimate investigative tools under Ghanaian law.

Akurugu highlighted the crucial role journalists play in fighting corruption, stressing the need for accurate and responsible reporting to raise public awareness, promote transparency, and hold institutions accountable. The training brought together state law enforcement bodies, including EOCO and FIC, to engage the media on their complementary roles in combating financial crime.
The initiative forms part of the OSP’s strategy to collaborate with the media in promoting transparency and accountability. By educating journalists on asset confiscation laws, the OSP aims to enhance media reporting on corruption and financial crimes, ultimately contributing to a more informed public discourse.
