Chicago Illinois ,October 21 2017: The maiden fundraising by the BlackStar Seed Nation and the NAPE Foundation kicked off in Chicago today October 21 2017 at 6768 S. Stony Island , Chicago Illinois. The BlackStar Seed Nation (BlackStars in S.S.P.A.C.E.)founded by Akua Akyaa Agyeman’s is a non-profit organization that provides the youth with educational and social action opportunities to learn about and invest in Africa and the Diaspora. BlackStars in S.S.P.A.C.E. is also a youth program for children ages 5-18 years (K-HS) offering Culture & History, Ghanaian Languages- Akan- Twi, Ga, and Ewe Dance & Music, Arts & Crafts and Soccer League. In an effort to fund the program and increase participation, it partnered with the The Naa Amerley Palm Education (NAPE) Foundation, funded by Dr. Peter Okantey, in a mega Gala fundraising dubbed Black Star Annual Gala. Ironically the NAPE Foundation based in Accra, Ghana, West Africa and Portland, Oregon, USA’s main mission is to increase the availability of higher educational opportunities for Ghanaians by offering student scholarships to attend Palm Institute of Strategic Leadership. This it hopes would be achieved within a framework that nurtures leadership and embraces sound principles, ethics, and values in order to promote a more just and sustainable future.
Attendance at the annual fundraising in Chicago could be described as a success due to a community that normally shows more interest in supporting each other in terms of death, birth and celebrations such as birthdays etc. and not in the investment in its youth. If the community members can refocus and ascribe same investment we put into other events and divert it into the future of our youth, we would be a force to recon with! Hopefully by next year, there would be more awareness of the importance of investing in the youth which would lead to a higher attendance. Present at the event was the President of the Ghana National Council, Paa Kwasi Sam, elders and members of the community.
The fundraising started with Akua Akya Agyeman thanking the patrons for coming and stated the need for the fundraising. Main sponsors of the event were Oakley Construction and Gold Coast Home Health Inc.
Awards were given to the following: Solomon Adufah, Young Entrepreneur Honoree and Mr. Kofi Jantuah, Service and Dedication award. Gold Coast Home Health and Oakley Construction were also honored at the event.
