VACANT FORMER LIBRARY TO BE USED AS OFFICE SPACE BY NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION IN INNOVATIVE USE OF CITY LAND

Black on Black Love Organization Will Use Site as Office Space

Mayor Emanuel introduced an ordinance today that would authorize the execution of a City as Landlord lease agreement with the Black on Black Love Organization for use of the vacant library located at 8828 South Stony Island Avenue. The property would be used as office space by Black on Black Love Organization, a 501 (c)(3) not-for-profit corporation that provides crime prevention, educational, and other social services.

The property located at 8828 South Stony Island Avenue is a former library that has no other municipal use. Black on Black Love Organization will use the property as office space and will work with the City on a subsequent conveyance of the property to the organization. Black on Black Love Organization provides social, educational, life skills, job placement assistance, parenting classes, and drug education programs. The organization also provides a mentoring program for at-risk high school youth, an annual Thanksgiving food drive, and an annual Christmas drive.

The proposed lease allows Black on Black Love Organization to occupy the space for $1.00 for the term of the lease. The organization would be responsible for all maintenance, security, custodial services, and payment of all utilities for the property. The lease will begin upon City Council approval and will expire on December 31, 2023. The lease may be canceled by either party.
