LAWYERS ADVERTISEMENT LAW TOO OLD, CHANGE IT – ATUGUBA

A lecturer at the Law Faculty of the University of Ghana Dr Raymond Atuguba says if the rule against lawyers advertising themselves is to be applied in toto no one in the General Legal Council will qualify.

Dr Atuguba said the law is over 50 years old and needs to be changed.

He said what the General Legal Council should be doing is to review the law to bring it to modern terms.

Dr Atuguba was reacting to the ban imposed by the General Legal Council on Human Rights Lawyer Franci-Xavier Sosu from practising as a Lawyer for three years.
He said the law is archaic and must be changed.

Dr Atuguba further stated that all is not well with legal education in Ghana and therefore the need for all universities that qualify to be allowed to admit law students and award law degree.

Speaking to GBCONLINE Dr Atuguba said the Board of Legal education should be revamped and given two functions, that is to determine the syllabus for preparing anyone who holds a law degree to practice as a lawyer and to conduct exams and declare results based on which the General Legal Council can call one to the bar.

He said too many students are denied the opportunity of legal education because of space.
