A fierce gun battle between the police and suspected landguards at Cantonments in Accra led to the arrest of 40 of the landguards.
The landguards were said to have attacked some workers on a parcel of land, when the police were called in.
Reports monitored on some radio stations in Accra indicated that there was confusion over a piece of land at Cantonments, an Accra suburb.
The reports indicated that both the Osu and the La chiefs were laying claim to the piece of land.
An eyewitness, who pleaded anonymity, told some radio stations: “There is a 1.5 acre land that has been sitting here for more than 20 years. A former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings, claims it is hers, while both the Osu and the La stools also claim it is theirs.
“The Osu Stool built a wall around the land and left some landguards within the land and they have been staying there for about two weeks,” the eyewitness said, adding that “the police broke the wall, jumped onto the compound and started exchanging fire with the landguards,”.
A police source told the Daily Graphic that 17 of the suspected landguards were detained at the Cantonments Police Station, while the rest were sent to other stations.
