Ideologies irrelevant in Ghana politics – Dr Wereko Brobbey

Former Chief Executive of the Volta River Authority (VRA), Dr Charles Wereko Brobby, has questioned the usefulness of ideologies in Ghana’s politics.

According to him, some political parties in Ghana who are boastful of their political ideologies fail to introduce programmes and policies based on ideological lines when they have the opportunity of being in power.

Speaking to Fiifi Banson on Anopa Kasapa on Kasapa 102.3 FM on Tuesday, Dr Wereko Brobby emphasised that the time has come for political parties in Ghana to move beyond touting ideologies whenever they are in power and actually introduce initiatives that will meet the needs of the people.

He described former President John Agyekum Kufuor as the greatest socialist President in Ghana’s history.

Dr Wereko Brobby, who is also the Chief Policy Analyst at Ghana Institute of Policy Options, noted that although the former first gentleman of the land has a capitalist background, he introduced several socialist intervention programmes during his regime such as; free maternal healthcare, National Health Insurance Scheme and free transportation for pupils among several others to improve the welfare of the citizenry.

“I have never believed in ideologies, we in Ghana like talking about centre left, centre right, property owning democracy that is not what matters. The most important thing is what you do with the power that you have. Kufour had power and we’re all witnesses to the laudable policies he implemented.”
