There was a gun attack by suspected armed robbers at the West Hills Mall at Weija in Accra leaving one person in a critical condition.
The gang of six men launched an attack at the Silverbird Cinema end of the Mall which resulted in two injuries around 4pm.
Two suspects – Steven, 20, a shoe maker and Sulley Jerry, 24, unemployed – are in police custody. The other four, according to the Weija Police command, are believed to be hiding in the roof of the cinema.
Items found on the suspects included a short gun loaded with live bullets and a pair of scissors. The suspects were nearly lynched by angry shoppers, but the police swiftly intervened and whisked them away.
According to the Business Manager of Silverbird Cinemas Justice Grant, one of his staff is in a critical condition at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital. The other injured person was treated at the GASMA hospital and has since been discharged.
“The robbers went to our booth where we do the projections and started shooting sporadically so my staff who was the projectionist in the booth jumped out of one of the windows into the cinema hall and was in a pool of blood and was rushed to the hospital,” Grant told Accra-based Joy FM.
Starrfmonline.com’s checks at the Mall show that there is increased police and military presence.
