Ghana: Construction of First Batch of Community Senior High Schools under way!

Following the President’s announcement of the introduction of a progressively Free Senior High Education in his State of the Nation Address, many are those who are questioning the source of funding for the programme.

The Minister of Education, Professor Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang, has lately come under a barrage of criticism for reportedly stating that she doesn’t know the source of funding for the Free SHS in 2015/2016 academic year.

While the arguments continue, some educational experts are also questioning the timing of the policy saying the government should rather solve the numerous challenges facing Senior High Schools instead of rushing to introduce free SHS at this critical moment.  Others argue that the project should be piloted first to know its viability and challenges before being introduced.

The president seems to be doing both in answer to his critics as he was seen cutting the sod for the construction of new school buildings to be ready for his 2015/2016 free SHS agenda.President Mahama made these observations on Monday, March 3, when he cut sod for the construction of the first of 50 community day senior high schools. The ceremony took place in Nyanoa in the Upper West Akyem District of the Eastern Region.
