CHICAGO — Chicago Public Schools will remain closed Tuesday due to the extreme cold, officials announced Monday.

School was called off Monday due to the extreme cold conditions, and CPS said in a statement that it “will continue to monitor weather conditions.”

“We will continue to put the safety of our students and families first,” CPS CEO Barbara Byrd-Bennett said in a statement Monday. “This historic stretch of dangerously cold weather has forced the District to remain closed until we are confident that students can return to school safely.”

It’s the fourth time CPS has canceled school this month, including the two days the system called off classes on Jan. 6 and Jan. 7, when temperatures also plunged below zero.

Chicago experienced temperatures hovering between zero and about 2 degrees below zero Monday morning, though wind chills are expected to range from 25 degrees below zero to 35 degrees below during the day.

Other local programs such as Boys & Girls Clubs of Chicago were canceled Monday, and some area YMCA centers were operating with reduced hours.

On Tuesday, the forecast includes a high of about 3 degrees with windchills as low as 32 degrees below zero, according to the National Weather Service. The weather service issued a wind chill warning in effect until Wednesday morning.

CPS said it will make a determination by about noon Tuesday about whether or not classes will be back in session on Wednesday.
