Erith and Thamesmead Election 2019: New Labour candidate wins

Labour’s Abena Oppong-Asare has been elected as the next MP for Erith and Thamesmead after winning the seat with 48 per cent of the votes and a majority of 3,758.

It was declared early on Friday morning that Ms Oppong-Asare will become the new Labour MP for the constituency after she received 19,882 votes.

The Conservative candidate, Joe Robertson, came in at second place on election night, receiving 16,124 votes.

He was followed by Brexit Party candidate Tom Bright with 2,246 votes and Liberal Democrat Sam Webber with 1,984 votes.

The Green Party candidate Claudine Letsae won 876 votes, whilst Richard Mitchell of Christian Peoples Alliance received 272.

Labour’s Teresa Pearce was the constituency’s long-standing MP, winning the seat in the last three elections, but she stepped down ahead of the 2019 General Election.

Turnout was 63.3 per cent.
