Mega Celebration Of The Life Of Obaapanin Lydia Arthur In Chicago.

Funerals in Ghana are not only an occasion to mourn, it also present the opportunity to celebrate the life of the dearly departed. Funeral celebrations are hardly ever a somber or low-key affair. It is a social gathering attended by a large number of family and friends. The celebration of the life of Obaapanin Lydia Arthur, mother of Mrs. Comfort Afriyie and her siblings in Chicago was no different. The JLM Center, 2266 West Jackson Boulevard was “packed” with revelers, majority dressed in black and red traditional funeral clothing. The various Ghanaian traditional Chiefs and Queens dressed in expensive traditional fabrics took turns with their elders and members to greet the family of the bereaved and others present. The hall was overcrowded to the point that some attendees were seen standing in the hallways whilst others stood in spaces behind those seated. Locally trained Adowa dancers, “opening of the floor” by family and friends, the wink majestic royal Adowa dance movements by the Asantefuohene, Nana Addae Baffour and the Asantefuohemaa, Ohemaa Abena Amponsah, were delight to watch and highlights of the celebration. As usual, the legendary, Nana Yaw Marfo was the emcee of the evening. The lenses of www.sankofaonline were there to bring these images to our worldwide audience.
