August 17 2019, Chicago IL: Consistency and improvement in every organization leads to better achievement and participation. The Ghana National Council of Metropolitan Chicago (GNC) and the Ghanaian Professionals of North America (GPNA) have proved themselves as such as this year’s back to school program was a great success.
The Back to School Youth Conference included distribution of school supplies, career panel discussions, parent resource sharing, essay competition, awards of $500.00 scholarships to three deserving candidates, motivational speakers and free lunch.
There were also workshops that included Dance, Arts & Crafts, Creative Writing, and Storytelling & Games. Workshops were facilitated by Elder Asabere Agyeman-Badu, Victoria Timpo, Solomon Adufah, Dorcas Owusu, Emmanuel Acheampong, Akua Agyeman, Afua Agyeman-Badu, and Sena Amenu. Career panelists, represented by volunteers of the GPNA, spanned various fields from finance, health, and law to fashion design, education, and the air force. The guest speakers included young author Afia Akowuah and Dr. Fugar Setri.
The winners of the Essay Competition Scholarship were Gillian Clottey, Narvella Sefah, and Heather Amoako. The 3 Scholarship prizes were sponsored by the GNC, Jeff Badu of Badu Tax Services, LLC, and Nana & Mrs. Yaw Barnieh Agyeman and family. The community and sponors are very proud of all the scholarship candidates, who represent the bright future of the community!
The kids were seen having fun, learning, socializing and networking! The GNC has indeed come a long way in institutionalizing the program as an annual affair. Some of the kids agree with the president of the GNC, Mr. Paa Kwasi Sam and ask that the GNC should consider making parts of the program an all-year affair. Compared to the previous three years, the number of kids who benefited from the program doubled to 100.
Present to distribute the items to the children were the President of the GNC, Mr. Paa Kwasi Sam, Youth Secretary Akua Agyeman, Assistant Business Manager Abena Ampofo, Business Manager Mrs. Eunice Cromwell, Secretary Sandra Amonoo, Special Events Coordinator Mr. Henry Nartey, members of the GNC, Mr. Asanga and others.
