The pilot of a plane experiencing mechanical problems over downtown Chicago made an emergency landing this morning on Lake Shore Drive, gliding over traffic stopped at a red light near Buckingham Fountain.
No one was injured in the sunrise landing, which temporarily stopped northbound traffic on the drive.
The pilot walked away unscathed and appeared shaken but grateful as he spoke to reporters in front of the lakeshore sunrise.
“It’s a blessing,” John Pedersen said.
The green-and-white two-seater plane had started shaking vigorously as he flew over the city, and Pedersen made a mayday call to air traffic controllers.
“There’s no way I could have got it to Midway or O’Hare,” he said.
