Ghana’s energy debt, currently standing at $3 billion, can be significantly reduced by addressing revenue leakages in the power distribution sector, according to the Africa Center for Energy Policy (ACEP). Kodzo Yaotse, ACEP’s Policy Lead for Petroleum and Conventional Energy, emphasized that the financial strain is largely due to the lack of accountability among government-owned utility companies.
To rectify the situation, Yaotse recommended the involvement of a third-party entity to manage and operate the distribution sector. This, he argued, would enable the setting of realistic targets and empower the regulatory body to function effectively. By addressing these revenue leakages, Ghana can take a crucial step towards alleviating its substantial energy debt.
