Ghana’s incoming Roads and Highways Minister, Kwame Governs Agbodza, has revealed a staggering GH¢665 million interest on the country’s GH¢113 billion road debt. This alarming figure was disclosed during Agbodza’s vetting by the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Monday, January 20, 2025.
According to Agbodza, the previous administration left behind a minimum of GH¢113 billion in commitments, with GH¢20 billion in unpaid certificates being a major concern. The interest on this debt has ballooned due to the nature of the contracts, posing a significant challenge for the incoming administration.
Agbodza emphasized the need for urgent attention to address these unpaid certificates and high interest rates, warning that failure to do so could lead to further fiscal challenges for the country. As the Minister-designate for Roads and Highways, Agbodza is committed to tackling this issue head-on and finding solutions to mitigate the financial strain on the state.
