In a press release issued on November 28, 2024, the Ministry of the Interior has declared Friday, December 6, 2024, as a statutory public holiday to mark Farmers’ Day in Ghana. This day is set aside to recognize the significant contributions of farmers and fishermen to the country’s economic growth.
According to the Minister for the Interior, Henry Quartey (MP), the public is expected to observe this day as a statutory public holiday throughout the country. This means that schools, businesses, and other institutions will be closed on this day to allow citizens to celebrate and honor the hard work of Ghana’s farmers and fishermen.
Farmers’ Day has been celebrated in Ghana since 1988, and it is typically observed on the first Friday of December every year ². The day is marked with various activities, including prize-giving ceremonies to deserving farmers and fishermen, as well as open gatherings in the 16 regions across Ghana.
By declaring Farmers’ Day as a statutory public holiday, the government of Ghana is demonstrating its commitment to recognizing the important role that farmers and fishermen play in the country’s economy.
