Fully armed security personnel accompanied by armed police officers raided the studios of Metro TV in Ghana on Wednesday, November 27. The reason behind the raid is yet to be fully disclosed, but it’s reported that the personnel claimed to have a court order against the station.
According to Dr. Randy Abbey, the host of Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana, the armed officers were accompanied by a court bailiff and attempted to seize his private vehicle. Dr. Abbey alleged that the officers harassed him and disrupted his show, condemning their actions vehemently.
The Ghana Police Service has issued a statement urging the company’s staff and management to remain calm while they investigate the incident. According to the police statement, the officers accompanied the bailiff to execute a court order on behalf of a creditor, Vodacom Business Ghana Limited.
Dr. Abbey questioned the legitimacy of the court order, asking why the officers were looking for him and attempting to seize his car. He also expressed concerns about the involvement of the Ghana Police Service, citing impunity.
The incident has raised concerns about press freedom and the rule of law in Ghana.
