Mortuary workers across Ghana are preparing to lay down their tools once again, as the Mortuary Workers Association of Ghana (MOWAG) has announced a nationwide strike set to begin on Thursday, November 28, 2024. This decision comes after authorities failed to address the association’s longstanding grievances, despite temporary suspension of an earlier industrial action on September 26, 2024, to allow for negotiations.

According to MOWAG, the issues that led to the initial strike remain unresolved, and the association has been left with no choice but to take this decision to protect the interest of its members. The strike will affect mortuary services nationwide, potentially disrupting funeral arrangements and impacting bereaved families.

MOWAG has repeatedly highlighted poor working conditions, inadequate salaries, and insufficient resources as major challenges facing its members. These challenges not only undermine the welfare of mortuary workers but also compromise the quality of mortuary services in Ghana.

Despite the planned strike, MOWAG’s leadership remains open to dialogue, urging authorities to take immediate steps to resolve the impasse. The association hopes that open and productive discussions can still resolve their differences, even at this late stage.
