In a dramatic turn of events, Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has adjourned the House indefinitely due to the absence of business for lawmakers to deliberate on. The recall session, initiated by the Majority caucus, was expected to tackle critical issues, including budgetary allocations and legislative reforms. However, the Majority caucus’s failure to appear in the Chamber stalled proceedings.
As Parliament reconvened on Thursday morning at the Accra International Conference Centre, only Members of Parliament from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) were present, occupying the seats typically reserved for the caucus with the majority numbers. The noticeable absence of New Patriotic Party (NPP) members sparked frustration among NDC members, who viewed it as a lack of commitment to parliamentary business.
Joseph Bukari, MP for Saboba, expressed disappointment, describing the NPP’s absence as “disappointing” and showing “clear disregard for parliamentary duties.” He emphasized that the governing party’s absence wasted time and undermined the resolve to address pressing national issues.
The ongoing tensions between the Majority and Minority caucuses have impacted parliamentary proceedings in recent weeks. With the indefinite adjournment, it remains uncertain when Parliament will reconvene to address stalled issues, leaving the legislative agenda for this session in flux.
